Zinc Electroplating
High-Performance Corrosion Protection by Petrotube
Zinc electroplating is a highly effective method for protecting steel fasteners from corrosion by acting as both a barrier and sacrificial coating.
At Petrotube, we ensure superior-quality zinc plating that enhances durability while maintaining the structural integrity of fasteners.
Why Choose Zinc Electroplating?
✔ Corrosion Resistance – Zinc plating provides long-term protection by corroding first, shielding the steel substrate.
✔ Extended Lifespan – Zinc corrodes 10 times slower than steel, offering enhanced durability.
✔ Aesthetic Finish – Delivers a smooth, shiny, and drip-free surface, ideal for industrial and commercial applications.
✔ Cost-Effective Solution – A thinner coating that does not interfere with fastener threads while reducing production costs.
Zinc Electroplating Process at Petrotube
1. Surface Preparation
Fasteners undergo a thorough cleaning process to ensure optimal adhesion of the zinc coating:
Alkaline Cleaning – Removes oil, grease, and contaminants.
Acid Pickling – Eliminates rust and surface scales for a clean, reactive surface.
2. Electroplating Process
The electro-deposition method is used to coat the fasteners with a uniform layer of zinc:
✔ Chemical Bath Immersion – Fasteners are placed in a bath containing dissolved zinc.
✔ Direct Current Application – Zinc from the anode dissolves and deposits onto the fastener surface.
✔ Coating Thickness Control – Determined by plating time, electrical current, and bath composition.
3. Hydrogen Embrittlement & De-Embrittlement Baking
Hydrogen embrittlement occurs when atomic hydrogen penetrates the fastener structure, leading to potential failures.
De-embrittlement baking is performed immediately after plating in our fully automated processing line with a
synchronized hydrogen de-embrittlement furnace and passivation line, ensuring maximum structural integrity.
Additional Corrosion Protection
1. Passivation Treatment
✔ A protective metal oxide layer is applied to prevent oxidation and extend the life of zinccoated fasteners.
✔ Enhances both corrosion resistance and appearance.
2. Chromate Conversion Coatings
For enhanced durability in moderate to severe environments, chromate coatings are applied:
✔ Trivalent Chromates (Clear, Blue-Bright, A/B Designation) – Used for Grade 5 / Class 8.8 fasteners.
✔ Yellow Chromate (C3+ Hexavalent-Free) – Recommended for Grade 8 / Class 10.9 fasteners.
